This one was easy for me. My valentine and I are both a little nerdy, quantitative methods folks (he: statistics in education, me: statistics in health). So this print from le petit elefant is a perfect gift for him. I just love it!

I've always had many handmade traditions around the holidays, I particularly enjoy making handmade gifts and wrapping them in creative ways. But now that we have a toddler in the house, our traditions are expanding in many new directions.

As a Pinterest lover, I've found an enormous amount of great holiday do-it-yourself ideas for the little guy. One that I'm especially excited about is the idea of making a felt tree for him to decorate (and hopefully it will be a terrific distraction from all the sparkly ornaments on our full-size Christmas tree!). I'm hoping this will be a fun holiday tradition for at least a few more years.

The tree works on the principle that "felt sticks to felt" and is very similar to "story boards" you may have encountered in the children's library as a kid. I cut a generous-sized Christmas tree from 36" wide green felt purchased at Joann Fabric. I went for the highest wool content I could find, in this case, 35%, because really the guiding principle here is "wool felt sticks to wool felt". And in fact the "stickiness" property is significantly higher the more wool content you have. Because of this, the artificial craft felts are not great for this project.

As it turns out, felt with any wool content is hard to find locally in great colors. So naturally I turned to etsy and of course, found an excellent seller with a superb collection at Felt on the Fly. My felt choices arrived last week and I can't tell you how gorgeous they are. I had no idea felt could be so beautiful.

Then it was time to cut and design ornaments! I love a little in-front-of-the-tv project, so decided to sew the layers of my felt ornaments by hand. I know there are probably some great alternate options out there using different adhesives if you're short on time.

And that was it! Hang the tree on the wall, give the little guy the ornaments and encourage him to "decorate"! Happy kid, happy parents ... and a happy holiday!

Holiday Knitting is Underway

So many stockings, so little time. Though small (2.5 inches wide by 6.5 inches tall), these little guys are knit on tiny needles - each one takes about 2 hours to complete. But they make such great little gift toppers, tree ornaments, silverware holders on the holiday table, and gift card containers ... I can't seem to keep them in my shop (admittedly, a good problem!). I've knit over 50 so far this season, and I'm still loving every stitch - a fun little project to have on my needles this fall.

My First Printable!

So I've been starting the holiday shopping and crafting, and was so thrilled to put some fresh tags, holiday cards and my first printable file in the shop!

I'm very excited about my first interactive card as well! When you pull the tab, the tree "lights up" with colored bulbs, and the sweet holiday message appears from it's hiding place. Very fun to design (though admittedly, quite time-consuming!).

I Heart Custom Orders

They often give me an opportunity to try new techniques, or stretch my design ideas just a little bit. And my Etsy clients are always awesome. Pretty Paper Garland

I've been wanting to play with some paper garland for a little while now. The design I had in my mind was much more delicate than what my sewing machine could handle, so I ended up hand-stringing these .5 inch white flowers. The result was really pretty - light and airy. And it was a nice, short project to contrast that ever-present long one (my dissertation). Nothing like some paper art to make you feel like you've made an accomplishment for the day!

Butterflies

Our little one is fascinated by the butterflies in our backyard, so I made him a little butterfly mobile from "found things" around our house (unused knitting needles, thread, bits of ribbon, some beads) and some free clipart images from the web. The breeze from the air conditioning vent across the room gives it just enough motion to keep things interesting (and not too tangled).

Bunting Fun

So I've been wanting to put together a little bunting for our holidays. I know it's only April, but it's always Christmas craft time around here - especially with all the custom stocking orders I'm still filling!

Today I had some time to pull out my fabric stash and play with some of the reds a bit. Though the photos aren't terrific, I think the little bunting turned out pretty well!

A New Twist

I have been salivating over the many bright vintage earrings on Etsy lately and decided to finally pull out my jewelry supplies and make some for myself. I found some great vintage beads from Etsy suppliers, as well as a terrific price on sterling silver wire and headpins (also at Etsy). After a few hours of practice on some old wire to loosen up those rusty skills, I was all ready to go. The results were very satisfying - a simple design, so totally my style.

But what to do with the extra beads? And how to incorporate this different direction into my existing shop. The earring tree card was born! I'd love to hear your thoughts on my creation - please leave a comment if you have a moment to spare.

Lunch Just Got a Little Brighter

I admit it. We are paper towel diners. We had a friend over for Thanksgiving dinner this past fall, put together the prettiest little table (with a tablecloth even!) and had to use paper towels for napkins.

No more.

After some thinking and reading and internet surfing and more thinking, I decided to try my hand at some simple cloth napkins. The results were so sweet that I decided to put them in my second Etsy shop.

The best part? They are small enough for my lunch box and are super washable! Eco-friendly and perfect for day-to-day use. What more could a moonlighting seamstress ask for?

Because we live far from our families, my husband and I always have to travel with our holiday packages. Despite the most careful packaging, we usually end up with torn giftwrap and squished bows when we arrive.

I love wrapping gifts, but am super excited about these bags. No more torn packages, lots of saved time and we can reuse them year after year, so no more piles and piles of wasted paper at the end of the big unwrapping!

The 'sunshine' card was inspired by one of my Ducks in a Row clients who needs a birthday card for her husband this month. The little tags are an extension of some promos I did last week for a lovely vintage shop in California.

Christmas in July!

Pop by the shop today to get a sneak preview of some adorable mini Christmas stockings that are currently listed. They are at an introductory price while I dream of cooler days (it's scorching in Miami this week!) and knit with wool trying to imagine hot cocoa, warm blankets, and snow falling.

The size of these stockings makes them perfect for gifting small items like candy, jewelry, or gift certificates. They are also darling as holiday table place settings and can easily be adapted to hang on a holiday tree.

A Perfect Scuba Day

We lucked out with beautiful weather, almost no winds, and super calm seas yesterday - perfect conditions for our second official dive in Key Largo. And for the first time, my husband DIDN'T spend half the trip sick on the boat.

We saw a good-sized nurse shark, a beautiful sting ray, the biggest lobster I've ever seen, and a shy goliath grouper.

Unfortunately, my cheap-o underwater camera does none of it justice. But, I did get some cool pictures of our gear, some lovely scuba bubbles, and Nick demonstrating perfect buoyancy (it took us a long time to master that!).

Sweet, Scented Sachets

Aren't these wonderful? About 5 inches square and filled with 1/2 - 3/4 cup of dried lavender buds. Our house smells delicious. And the images are proof positive that custom orders make sewing more fun. This client was delightful to talk with and had great ideas for colors. A few more finishing touches and these little beauties will be on their way to Australia!

Back in Business!

My beloved digital camera, the one I have cherished for more than 4 years, took it's final breath early last week. A photo of my darling husband turned out like this:

Definitely not what he looks like :).

So, a little wrench was tossed into my Etsy business with no way to upload new images. But yesterday our new camera arrived: Canon PowerShot A720 IS. It's a smaller sibling to my beloved (Canon PowerShot S1 IS), but I have to say I'm impressed. Terrific image quality, super easy to use, and delightfully lightweight. Plus, this one has a macro feature which I have thoroughly enjoyed these past couple of hours:

This image is a preview of a sweet little blanket and baby hat set that will soon be listed in my sister-shop: Ahnalee Marie. The yarn is a delicious organic cotton that is wonderfully soft (particularly for a cotton) and a perfect weight for naps, car rides and general carrying around. This new shop will be home to my non-greeting card items; essentially, where I will feed my need for bigger projects that involve yarn and fabric and sewing ... all my non-paper loves.

Our first official scuba dive in the Florida Keys was a true adventure! We dove during a small craft advisory (translation: big, big, big waves), which was not easy, but we were well rewarded! Two nurse sharks and a HUGE goliath grouper made for a fun set of dives.

Ribbons in a Row

Though I can't say for sure, I think it was flipping through a Martha Stewart magazine in the past few months that I saw this handy little idea for storing ribbon.

Since my craft drawers are over-full, I decided to give it a try.

I pulled apart one of the many dry-cleaning hangers that seem to linger around our house for much too long (I hate wire hangers) and threaded these little beauties right on. I have to say, it's super handy to have so many of them all tidy in a row (there are still many more stuffed in a drawer in my studio), and they are within arm's reach now that they hang from my work-table.

Domesticated

The only ironing I ever enjoyed was my father's hankerchiefs. Perfect white squares, easy to manage cotton, and fun to fold and perfectly crease. When I learned to sew as a kid, calico quilt squares were kind of fun too. But any other ironing, particularly men's button-down shirts, drives me mad. Until now.

I threw every Macy's promotion I could find at this thing, but it was still a splurge. Worth every penny. She arrived yesterday and is the best thing that's happened to my perfectly un-domesticated life in a long, long time. I've ironed three times today: once this morning in a mad dash for work, again when I got home (suddenly all those wrinkled shirts were no threat) and this evening I couldn't resist pulling out some fresh calico and sewing up a new batch of sachets. My husband is perplexed, and I think a little concerned.

Oh, Rowenta. Where have you been all my life?

Wonderful Project Wonderful

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you'll see I have re-instated the Project Wonderful ads. I hosted these ads in the past, but the code was incompatible with blogger and often failed. The folks at ProjectWonderful fixed this little bug and I'm happy to once again host ads here at Feathered Friends for just $.10 per day.

I'm also back in the game myself, with ads on a variety of Etsy-related blogs across the web. I've found success with my old ad, but recently designed a new ad that features more of my work. I think this might be a bit more 'clickable' and would love your opinions! The old ad is on top, the newer one on the bottom.

Underwater Inspirations

My husband and I have been learning to scuba dive the past couple of weeks and are hoping to complete our certification this Sunday. Although my focus has been heavily on BREATHING for the first dive last weekend, I did have a moment to look around and realize where I was (30 feet under at the beautiful Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo, Florida). It's BEAUTIFUL. The colors are a little muted and things appear surrounded in this yellow glow. There were fish everywhere, which I thought would freak me out, but frankly I have much bigger problems (like remembering to BREATHE).

We haven't been allowed to bring our cameras under with us yet, so I'll share a picture of Molasses Reef (last weekend's dive) taken by the folks at divespots.com. The colors and textures are inspiring, don't you think?

Windows

A few new-ish favorites to share with you from my shop. I have been trying to improve my skills with the exacto knife and found cutting windows was a good way to practice. Windows led to frames and frames led to, well, something to frame! The flowers and hearts held in place by embroidery floss felt just right. I hope you enjoy them too.

New York State of Mind

We were in NYC for a week and I had so much fun wandering the city and taking it all in. Highlights (pictured below) include the annual Macy's Flower Show, cupcakes at the Cupcake Cafe, mocha coffee at Le Pain Quotidien, the little owl statues in the windows of the Strand bookstore (and the books - oh my the books!), and of course the awesome Metropolitan Museum of Art.

My dear friend Jennifer was with me, so we did a little fun shopping as well. We both loved ABC Home and Fishs Eddy. These little wine glasses make me swoon:

And of course we hit the many bead stores and oh how I LOVED purl in Soho. They have a nifty little blog here and I was SO inspired by the babette blanket hanging in their shop:

Celebrate with Birthday Cards!

Birthdays are one of the few occasions that we still send snail mail across the miles. Unfortunately, often we get so busy that by the time the day has arrived we often haven't yet purchased a card to send and instead settle for a phone call.

An easy way to prevent this is to designate a few times a year in which you plan to buy birthday cards for that season. You can visit your local card shop, or head to EtsyGreetings for a great selection of handmade cards. Plan to spend some time and enjoy yourself!

If you want, you can even address and stamp those envelopes as soon as you get home. Then, as each birthday approaches, you will simply need to sit down to write that special sentiment and drop it in the mail!

Madelyn at Courage My Love has such a pretty and romantic shop. Her profile begins with this wonderful quote from Lewis Carrol:

There are so many beautiful things about the Beautifully Strange shop at Etsy. The owner, Kathleen, incorporates terrific colors, great designs and humor into her many unique concepts. If you've spent much time at Etsy, you know that pocket mirrors like this one are in abundance. But very, very few incorporate original art into the design. That's what I love about this mirror.
